Getting Started with Mezmo

Mezmo is the easiest centralized log management software. Learn about logging, how to get started, and how to maximize our log collection, monitoring, retention, alerting, and analysis features.

Welcome Future Mezmoers!

Welcome to Mezmo! Mezmo’s easy, blazing fast system allows you to collect, monitor, parse, live tail, graph, and analyze logs with clear visualizations and smart alerting all within minutes.

In this quick start guide, we will walk you through the following steps to get you onboarded as smoothly as possible:

  1. Set-up an Account
  2. Create an Organization
  3. Add a single or multiple log source(s) (Ingestion)
  4. Add Team Members
  5. Search Logs
  6. Create Views & Alerts
  7. Change Plan
  8. Create Boards & Graphs

Step 1: Set up your Account

Click the Sign Up button on the Mezmo website.
You will be automatically enrolled into a 14-day free trial.

Step 2: Create an Organization

Your organization is an independent workspace where you can access & configure your logs, add members, change billing plan etc. Once you create an organization, you will be given an auto-generated ingestion key, which you can use to send in logs. Learn more about organization management here.

Step 3: Add A Log Source

Next, choose the ingestion logging source. Mezmo offers a variety of ingestion methods. Our LogDNA Agent can be installed on Kubernetes, Openshift, Linux, Windows, MacOS and you can take a look at our source code on GitHub. You can also take a deeper dive into ingestion here.

If you do not have any available logs to source from or you would just like to explore Mezmo with sample data, simply click on TRY NOW!

Each organization can have multiple ingestion sources. In the Mezmo app, click on the Help button (bottom left corner of the dashboard), then Logging Setup to add more log sources to your organization.

Step 4: Add Team Members

Start inviting team members to view the logs flowing into your new organization! Find it under Settings > Team > Members. Learn more about how to manage member access here.

Step 5: Search Your Logs

Because we use Google-like search syntax, searching in Mezmo is easy and straightforward. Just type in your search terms, and Mezmo will return your results almost instantaneously.

In the Mezmo app, the Search Box can be found at the very bottom of your dashboard. Search for certain keywords in your logs or to navigate through your logs quicker by jumping to a specific time/date.

Learn about our Toggle Viewer tools and Toggle Timeline which allows you to highlight, search, filter, and mark certain loglines for easier visibility.

Step 6: Create Views and Alerts

One of Mezmo’s most useful features are views. When you use the search bar to find a group of similar loglines, you can save this filter as a view. A view is like a bookmark, allowing you to easily and quickly access these certain loglines as many times as you want.
Once you have created a view, you can now create an alert

If you are ingesting using our sample data, try the following:

  1. Search "invalid user test" in the search bar. Your logs should then be filtered into a list of results containing these keywords.
  1. On the top navigation bar, click on the Unsaved View button and create a new view / alert. When creating a new view, you will be able to input a name for your view and a category you would like to organize it under. A category is a group of views and you can have multiple categories in your organization.
  1. Create an alert on your view. Alerts will notify you when new lines show up (presence alerting) or don't show up (absence alerting), in the view. Learn more about alert integrations here.

Congratulations, you've just created your first view! It is now accessible whenever in a list of saved views under Views on the left-hand side of your dashboard.

Step 7: Change Plan

Once your 14 day trial is over, you can still use Mezmo on a free plan but your logs will no longer be retained. If you would like to retain your logs for 7, 14, or 30+ days, you can go to Settings > Billing > Overview to select one of our paid plans. Compare all our pay-per-usage pricing model here.

Step 8: Create Boards and Graphs

Boards and graphs are another one of Mezmo’s extremely useful features. Boards are your collection of graphs and are very similar to views. Graphs provide easy log monitoring and visualization, with the ability to filter certain queries to refine results for the data on graphs.

Your saved boards will be located on the left-hand side of your dashboard and this is where you will be able to create, duplicate, delete, and filter boards. You can also "star" boards so you can more quickly access your favorite boards!

  1. First, create a new board by selecting the + New Board button. At the top of your board, you will then be able to edit the board's name and the category it is organized in. You can also duplicate and delete the board.

You can then create a graph by selecting the + Graph button.

  1. Next, choose a system field to visualize on the graph. This is known as a plot, or query, and you will be able to add multiple plots per graph. Once you chose a system field, an option to choose an additional system field value will appear.

Congratulations, you've just created your first graph!

Note - This graph is not an accurate representation of how data is usually visualized. Mezmo's sample data is sent a one time, so data points will not be spread over time. This example graph below that is not connected to the sample data represents how a normal graph might look.
